About the department
The department hospitalizes patients referred through the emergency room, or after coordination with the department's physicians.
The department's uniqueness is in its focusing on "classical internal medicine" in all its clinical aspects in complex acute hospitalized patients, by concentrating and defining the medical problems by priorities and their interrelations, and determining the examination and treatment plan, while matching the relevant treating entities with the problems.
The department serves as a center for referral and counseling in the areas of atherosclerosis - diagnosis, risk assessment, treatment and prevention, and mainly blood lipids disorders. In addition, the Department coordinates the treatment of diabetic foot patients in collaboration with the orthopedics and vascular departments, as well as the treatment of patients with thalassemia major who require hospitalization.
Other areas of interest concern the deputy director, Dr. Limor Azulay-Gitter, a nephrologist with special interest in kidney transplantation. The other senior physician, Dr. Aviv Sagee is geriatric physician.
Academic and research activities
The department is affiliated with the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. Prof. Avishay Elis is a clinical Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, President of the Israeli Society of Internal Medicine, and lectures at conferences in Israel and abroad on atherosclerosis and blood lipids disorders.
Currently active researches:
Balancing the risk factors for atherosclerosis and hyperlipidemia, and a variety of selected topics in internal medicine, the main ones being infectious diseases, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, venous thrombosis and anticoagulation.
