About the Department
The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, directed by Prof. Ilan Shimon, a renowned expert in the field of pituitary diseases, pituitary tumors, prolactin and growth hormones. Prof. Shimon is a graduate of the Hebrew University, Hadassah Medical School and Head of the Laboratory of Neuroendocrine Tumors, Felsenstein Research Center, Tel-Aviv University.
The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism provides ambulatory services for patients with diseases of the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal and parathyroid, and endocrine problems of the pancreas and gonads. Their specialty clinics treat patients with thyroid cancer and pituitary tumors and patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 and type 2. In addition they have a clinic for patients with osteoporosis and a unit for bone mineral density measurement.
UNITS OF EXPERTISE
- Thyroid Cancer: treating more than 2,500 patients after thyroid surgery for thyroid cancer. Radioactive iodine is given to most patients, together with endocrine care and multi-disciplinary follow-up.
- Pituitary Adenomas: treating secreting and non-secreting adenomas, including prolactinomas, acromegaly and Cushing's disease.
- Diabetes Mellitus type 1: treats young diabetic patients with insulin pumps.
- Osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases – treating patients with osteoporosis, hyperparathyroidism, Vitamin D deficiency and Paget disease
