About the center
The otolaryngology center at Rabin Medical Center is one of the largest of its kind in Israel, with extensive experience and activity. The department is affiliated with the Sackler School of Medicine at Tel Aviv University.
The department conducts extensive academic activities, including training of medical students, training of interns and residents in various aspects of otolaryngology surgery, and intensive research work on various subjects related to the field.
The department consists of several units:
Head and Neck Surgery
The Department offers a range of surgical and therapeutic treatments for patients with head and neck tumors (tongue tumors, salivary gland tumors and benign or malignant tumors of the head and neck). In addition, the department offers surgical and non-surgical treatment of various diseases of the thyroid gland and the parathyroid gland. In addition to tumor resection, cervical lymph node (cervical dissection) surgery is performed in patients with a widespread disease in the neck. Endoscopic surgeries (minimally invasive) are offered to suitable patients who request this type of surgery. For patients after significant surgical procedures, rehabilitation is offered, by means of micro-surgical reconstruction, which allows for good functional and cosmetic results after extensive ablation. This is one of the most advanced fields of its kind in the world, where tissue is transferred from a distant place in the body to cover a deficiency in the face and neck.
The team has advanced technological means that enable early detection of throat cancer and extensive experience in surgical and oncological treatment. Each patient is presented in a multi-disciplinary meeting before a decision is made. With the help of the rehabilitation team, that includes a speech and swallowing therapists, the patient resume functioning early and with maximum efficiency.
Treatment of voice and hoarseness problems (Laryngology)
Treatment of voice problems resulting from edema, warts and polyps of the vocal cords or functional problems - improper operation of the vocal cords.
The department utilizes state-of-the-art equipment, including a digital stroboscope and a sophisticated vocal cords imaging system that allow precise imaging of lesions and detection of pre-cancerous tumors. The treatment of vocal cord diseases is performed with a surgical approach and with the help of a speech therapist, who takes part in the diagnosis and treatment process since its inception.
The team uses microscopic equipment that enables accurate removal of lesions, while minimizing surgical damage, including a sophisticated laser device for the treatment of papillomas and other lesions of the vocal cords.
Nose and sinuses
The unit and clinic treat a wide variety of nose and sinus problems, including: breathing disorders through the nose, lack of sense of smell, snoring and sinus diseases.
Most surgeries are performed endoscopically - through the nasal cavity, without the need for external incisions.
In collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery, some hypophyseal tumors are resected endoscopically through the nasal cavity, without the need to open the skull.
Ear diseases
The unit treats a variety of external, middle and internal, ear diseases such as: restoration of the eardrums and auditory bones, hearing rehabilitation (otosclerosis staphodotomy surgery), treatment of hearing loss and dizziness. In addition, otoneurological surgery (facial nerve paralysis, tumor resection) is performed in collaboration with the hospital's neurosurgery department. Patients with severe bilateral deafness are offered a cochlear implant that allows auditory rehabilitation.
Treatment of snoring and sleep apnea
A clinic deals with the diagnosis of breathing disorders during sleep and various methods of treatment of snoring and sleep apnea. The clinic operates in close cooperation with the sleep laboratory doctors of the nearby Rabin Medical Center and with the physicians of the Oral and Maxillofacial Department. The clinic has extensive experience in diagnosing the cause of snoring and sleep apnea by using optical fibers to simulate the location of the obstruction in the respiratory tract. This important and unique test takes a short period of time and allows the medical staff to learn about the causes of the disorder. These data help to match each patient with the optimal treatment plan for him.
