About the center
Beilinson Cardiothoracic Surgery Center is the largest and leading center in Israel.
The main areas of activity of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Center are: coronary artery, bypass surgery, valve surgery, valve repair, aorta surgery , heart transplants , lung transplants, heart and lungs transplants and LVAD implantation. The center includes research laboratories, located in the Felsenstein Medical Research Center, in the Genetics Building and in the Laboratory for the Preparation and Preservation of Heart Valves (Homograft bank).
Approximately 1,000 cardiac operations, approximately 500 chest and lung operations, and about 500 cardiac operations in children within the framework of the Schneider Children's Medical Center, are performed in the department each year.
The vast majority of all lung transplants, about one half of all heart transplants, and most the artificial heart transplants in the State of Israel, are performed in Rabin Medical Center.

Academic and research activities
The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery conducts extensive academic and research activity.
Currently active research projects:
1. The importance of BAX type proapoptotic gene for cardiac function and its recovery from ischemia and reperfusion.
2. Pre-conditioning of rat heart by pharmacological means.
3. The effect of ischemia and reperfusion on the isolated liver of a rat.
4. Contraction and relaxation of human blood vessels following different separation techniques during bypass surgery.
Consulting the medical staff:
During hospitalization you are entitled to receive detailed information about your health condition, the surgery, the treatment and the required examinations. To obtain this information you may contact the department's doctors after the doctor's round. Subject to your approval, medical information about your condition will be provided to your relatives. If you do not approve providing this information, inform your doctors.
Social Worker:
Talks with patients and their families are held from 09:30 every day except Fridays and Saturdays.
Delivery of medical information in the department:
Sunday - Thursday between 12:00 - 13:30
In the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at 14:00, information will be provided by the unit head or a senior physician.
