“I arrived to my shift at the neonatal intensive care unit on that dreadful Saturday morning, the day when all sense of innocence was shattered. I was in charge of admissions that morning and went with the physician's staff to the southern surgery room to treat a wounded woman who came for an emergency cesarean surgery. The only piece of information I had was that she is in late stages of pregnancy and suffering from a gunshot wound.
In the southern surgery room, we prepared a station to treat the unborn infant and used our emergency equipment from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) as this site is custom to treating adults and is not built or equipped to treat infants, but I thought to myself, difficult times require creative solutions.
The baby girl did not breathe well or effectively and presented a slow and shallow heartbeat. We started to treat her.
