Soroka University Medical Center of the Clalit Group has been chosen by the international company Philips as an international center of excellence in the field of cardiology. In this framework, medical teams from the Cardiology Institute at Soroka will provide advanced clinical training in the field of invasive cardiology to doctors from around the world.

The Catheterization Unit at Soroka is the only such unit in the country where the OneViewX system, which enables live broadcasting for online training on medical practices in the field of catheterization, has been installed.

The catheterization suite at Soroka contains the most advanced technologies in the world, among them IntraSight 7, a coronary imaging system that employs interventional tools that allow accurate identification of the medical problem using internal ultrasound imaging by means of a transducer that is located in the coronary arteries and allows close viewing of atherosclerotic plaque and makes it possible to combine the test results with X-rays of the heart for a comprehensive and reliable picture of the patient's condition. In addition, the technology reduces the exposure of patients and staff to radiation, thus maintaining their safety.

The first case presented was that of a woman in her 70s who was suffering from chest pain during exertion. She had undergone a past catheterization, during which a stent was implanted into the right coronary artery. The patient underwent a procedure to treat the anterior descending artery of the heart. It was performed by Dr. Carlos Cafri, director of the Catheterization Unit, who was accompanied by Prof. Doron Zager, director of the Cardiology Institute at Soroka, and Prof. Javier Escaned, head of the Invasive Cardiology Section of San Carlos Hospital in Madrid, Spain.

Dr. Carlos Cafri, director of the Catheterization Unit of the Cardiology Institute at Soroka: "The integration of the technologies in the Catheterization Unit in one platform helps us to maintain the continuity of the current work and speed up procedures that are performed routinely while using tools that allow us to achieve better clinical results. The technologies have been recommended by the American and European cardiology associations and now online training will also be possible for doctors all over the world."

Prof. Doron Zager, director of the Cardiology Institute at Soroka: "The new technologies in the field of heart imaging enable more accurate and safer treatment for our patients. We are proud that the Catheterization Laboratory of the Cardiology Institute at Soroka has been chosen as an international center of excellence of the Philips company. This cooperation is another example of our leadership in implementing new and advanced technologies for the benefit of Negev patients and the international recognition of the level of care they receive at Soroka."
