Nostromo's advanced Energy Storage Technology

For the First Time at a Hospital in Israel: Soroka University Medical Center will purchase Nostromo's advanced Energy Storage Technology

First published: 20.06.2022

Nostromo will provide the hospital with a storage system with a capacity of 1.2 megawatt hours after winning the Zero Carbon Hospital Challenge competition, with the support of the Ministry of Energy.

The system is expected to reduce the electricity costs of the air conditioning system at the hospital, provide backup for critical systems, and reduce carbon emissions.

Nostromo, which specializes in energy storage in buildings, signed an agreement with Soroka University Medical Center of the Clalit Group for the installation of an energy storage system, the first to be installed in a hospital in Israel. The system will be installed in the renovated energy center of the hospital's operating rooms. The collaboration between the two entities was established as part of the Zero Carbon Hospital Challenge competition to promote energy efficiency solutions and reduce carbon emissions at Soroka Medical Center, organized by the HealthIL health community and the PLANETech climate change community.

Under the agreement, Nostromo will install one unit of a storage system with a capacity of approximately 1,200 kilowatt-hours (1,000 tons of cooling per hour). It is expected to help reduce the hospital's air conditioning costs. Air conditioning needs comprise up to 40% to 50% of total electricity demand during peak hours. Nostromo will receive approximately NIS1.5 million for the system. About NIS800,000 will be paid by the hospital and about NIS700,000 will be covered by a Ministry of Energy grant.

Yoram Ashery, CEO of Nostromo Energy: "Soroka's investment in Nostromo's technology and its implementation in the operating room air conditioning system, alongside the support of the Ministry of Energy, reflect the trust of Soroka and the country in the company's technology and the need for the solution it provides. The hospital market is of strategic importance for Nostromo's technology, and we thank Soroka for its leadership in implementing innovative technologies to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency."

Yarden Nevo, deputy director general of Soroka: "Soroka Medical Center invests a great deal of effort in preserving the quality of the environment, reducing emissions, and energy efficiency. We place innovation at the forefront of the campaign and intend to lead the medical centers in Israel and serve as a role model for them. The installation of the system comprises the successful realization of a competition between start-up companies at the Zero Carbon Hospital Challenge held at Soroka. The technology was selected from among some 25 companies. We intend to continue the process and implement many more technologies to preserve the quality of the environment for future generations."
