Ophthalmic Ward
The ophtalmic ward provides high quality medical care for a range of patients. The service is provided by a multidisciplinary specialized team of doctors in all the subspecialties of ophthalmology, medical residents, specifically qualified nursery service managed by a Charge Nurse, nursing aides, domestic staff and healthcare assistants.
Operating rooms and procedures rooms
The ophthalmic section at Soroka medical center performs more then 3500 surgeries each year.
Two operating rooms and two procedural rooms function routinely every day.
Highly specialized clinical staff of physicians, nurses and support staff, provide a full range of ophthalmic surgical services for both adults and children.
Available 24-hours a day and 7-days a week for emergent cases of severe ocular trauma.
How to prepare for a surgical procedure?
- Avoid food and drink from 24.00 (12.00 am) on the night before the surgery.
- On the morning of the surgery you can take your regular pills with a small amount of water, except medications for diabetes.
- Note! Some procedures (i.e. glaucoma, oculoplastic, strabismus) requires cessation of your blood thinners 3-10 days before surgery (anti coagulants, i.e. Aspirin, Coumadin, Eliquis, Xarelto etc.) – only under a strict approval from your family doctor or cardiologist.
- You must arrive with a companion.
- Don’t bring any valuable items (Earings, Neckless, Watch etc.).
- In case your wear a hearing device you should bring it with you fully charged and functioning.
- On the morning of the surgery we recommend you to have a shower, wash your hair, remove any make-up or nail polish.
Outpatient Service
The ophthalmic outpatient service at Soroka Medical center, functions as a tertiary referral center, providing medical service for more than 40,000 patients a year.
On a single visit, we provide imaging, examination, and treatment (subject to medical requirement and availability) In addition, due to an increased prevalence of genetic ophthalmic conditions, we offer a comprehensive medical and surgical service for the follow-up, and treatment of children with congenital or acquired ophthalmic diseases (Glaucoma, Cataract, ROP, Amblyopia and more).

How to prepare for a visit in the outpatient clinic?
- A valid referral from a medical doctor.
- A list of your drops and daily dosage (we recommend bringing the bottles themselves with you or to keep a photo on your cellular device).
- Summary of relevant medical follow-up, and diagnostic tests (Imaging, lab etc...).
- If you use glasses, you should bring them with you.
In case of ocular misalignment (strabismus) please bring past photos of you.
Emergency Unit
The emergency unit is one of the busiest in Israel. Active 365 days a year, 24-hours a day and 7-days a week. It serves more than 12,000 patients a year. Including, all of Israel defense forces serving in nearby military bases across the Negev, victims of terror and all the population of the southern region of Israel.
The service covers all range of cases including:
- Eye infections and inflammations
- Ocular Injuries including complicated trauma cases
- Photo-keratitis, Chemical burns, and foreign particles in the Eye
- Vision disturbances
- Emergent surgeries
- Providing consultations on medical issues regarding eye manifestations to the entire hospital.
Research
The Ophthalmology section at the Soroka Medical Center promotes, and participate, in a variety of ongoing multicenter clinical trials, promotes studies in basic science, and genetics. The division is affiliated to the University of Ben-Gurion in the Negev.
Any conducted research is held under the approval of the Helsinki committee, and follows worldwide standards.
Any participant has to sign an informed consent after a comprehensive explanation of all the details regarding the study, the objective of the study, and a list of benefits, alternatives to the treatment, and possible risks.
