About the department
The department opened 22 years ago and was renovated in 1996. The department staff includes: head of department, deputy head of department, four senior physicians, two interns, a supervising nurse, a deputy supervising nurse, about 50 professional nurses, two clinical guide nurses, a social worker, two secretaries, a pharmacist, a dietitian and a physiotherapist.
The department treats critical patients after severe infection, trauma, transplantation, complex surgery, patients requiring artificial respiration and more.
The department has 12-14 beds, treats 500 patients a year and is responsible for resuscitation and stabilization of the outreach program in all the departments of the hospital. In addition, the department has extensive experience in the treatment of liver and lung transplantees.
The Institute for Nutrition Research engages in the treatment of obese and undernourished patients. The Institute provides a solution for patients suffering from intestinal failure in a unique clinic. The Institute has extensive research activities focused on the field of energy balance and the effects of fish oil.
Academic and research activities
The department conducts extensive research activities. Main research areas: innovative treatments for infections, nutrition and artificial respiration.
Prof. Singer is the Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at Tel Aviv University and Chairman of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN).
Dr. Yonatan Cohen is in charge of the subject of brain death and organ donor treatment, on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
Research areas in 2009/2010:
1. Energy Metabolism in critical patients (Ticacos study): Multi-center international research is concentrated in our hospital.
2. The effect of providing fish oil to patients with multiple injuries (in support of a grant from the IDF).
3. The effect of nutrition on recovery from acquired pulmonary infection, in the community (grant from the Chief Scientist).
4. Use of a pulmonary vibration identifying system.
5. Use of technologies that neutralize resistance to intubation.

Friday, 13:30-14:30. On Fridays there are no morning visits.
