Division Chair: Prof. Yoram Shapira
The Anesthesiology Division's team of physicians consists of 60 anesthesiologists – a professional team of doctors with state-of-the art expertise in the field of anesthesia. With equipment among the world's most advanced and modern drugs, they anesthetize patients undergoing surgeries. Some of these operations are extremely complicated, including organ transplants, heart surgery, lung surgery, head injury surgeries, surgeries in patients with mult-systemic injuries, surgeries in patients with severe co-morbidities, and more.
Departments and Clinics of the Division:
- Department of Anesthesiology
- General Intensive Care Department
- Pre-Anesthesia Clinic - in the framework of the Pre-surgery Clinic
- Pain Clinic - pain management in patients with acute and chronic pain
- The Recovery Room
The anesthesiologist examines patients who need anesthesia during surgeries, invasive procedures, and other treatments associated with pain or risk of interference with vital functions. He or she estimates the risk of the surgery and the patient's readiness to undergo it, and provides instructions for testing and treatment (medication) before the procedure. At the end of anesthesia, the anesthesiologist treats the patient in the recovery room until his condition stabilizes.
Academic activities and Research in the Division of Anesthesiology
The Division of Anesthesiology, including the General Intensive Care Unit, is a partner in teaching medical students from the Medical School at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) and from BGU's Medical School for International Health in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center,
students of emergency medicine and nursing from the Recanati School for Community Health Professions, and residents from Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot and Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon.
Research in the Division is constantly developing and advancing on a variety of topics. The Division's stated objective is to train four to six professors of anesthesiology over the next several years. Research is strongly emphasized, and only physicians who conduct research can advance in the framework of the Division.
