Amniocentesis AfterCareRabin Medical Center - 10/02/2011
Amniocentesis is an invasive procedure performed during pregnancy to examine a baby's chromosomes. Most often, an amniocentesis is done between 16-20 weeks of pregnancy (gestation). The amniocentesis involves a detailed guided ultrasound examination during which a needle is inserted through a mother's belly into the sac of amniotic fluid, the watery fluid that surrounds the fetus, and a small amount of the fluid is removed for genetic testing.
